One of the reasons you will be considering a futon bunk bed is because they save space, so when choosing think about a model that can be placed close to the wall and still be converted from sofa to bed without the need to move the frame. Some models require a greater anount of space between the bed and the wall than others and you will want to find one that is easy to convert and still save as much space as possible.

You will want to purchase a good quality futon bunk bed mattress. Many futons have mattresses that are made of poly-cotton blends and are quite comfortable. These models are much lighter than the traditional all cotton mattresses. The heavier cotton varieties can weigh as much as 80 pounds! If a futon bunk bed is used as a bed daily, an inner spring mattress is a good choice. They are more expensive, but they also offer better support and will last longer.

Another thing to consider with your futon bunk bed is the mattress cover. There are many styles available and you will probably want one that blends in with the room and looks good as a couch covering and is suitable as a mattress cover. Silk and cotton are both popular with people.

A family with teenage children who are a little short on space find a futon bunk bed ideal for their childrens room. The kids can use the couch during the day and within a short space of time have it convert to a bed for night use. This versatility also makes them very poplar with students.

Futons in the western world are loosely based on the Japanese variety, Whereas in Japan the futon was placed on the floor the bed manufacturers in the USA had the idea to put the futon in a frame and with some adaption people could use it as a couch in the day and a bed at night which widened its appeal.
