When in Spain, hunt for the interior -- and learn about Vejer de la Frontera

By: Jake Solochek

I was on a cruise ship that visited Almeria, Mallorca, Alicante, Marbella, Jerez and Gibraltar (yes, it's British now, but it was part of Spain for years).

That's when I learned that the REAL Spain is found away from the coast. I had a delicious meal of tapas near the Alhambra and I learned that the great city of Sevilla wasn't a seaside port.

I recommend a visit to the south of Spain, but staying away from the coast allowed me to see areas with less foreign "interference." Marbella isn't Spain, but walking into the halls of the Archivos of the Spanish Empire made me feel like a historian! Rent a home in the small city of Vejer de la Frontera for less than getting a hotel in a city.
