The Nightmare of Job Interviews

By: Rintu Basu

If you have a job then the chances are you have been interviewed at some stage. Many people don’t enjoy the formal process of being interviewed and often with good reason. Here are a few ways that interviews can go wrong.

Maybe because of the money, the conditions or you just no longer enjoy your current job, let’s just imagine you desperately want a new job and have been called to interview. The night before you diligently sit down to prepare.

Working through some of the advice on the internet you start practicing imagining the interviewer naked. This works for a while until you get the idea that they might do the same to you. Then your head is suddenly filled with thoughts of hundreds of people with better CVs, family connections or just being able to talk their way into the company. You read through your CV not taking anything in.

Having barely read through your CV you go to bed to dream of turning up to the interview naked. Morning comes round too soon and you are rushing out the door to get there on time. You arrive at the company just on time flustered, dishevelled and out of breath. Wheezing the name of your interviewer at the receptionist you get the clear idea that she thinks you are some crazed maniac as you suddenly go blank when she asks for your name.

A short wait eventually brings out the prune faced harpy that is to be your interviewer. She attempts a smile and you feel like you are at a funeral. Attempting small talk you manage some glib, obvious comments about the weather, traffic and something your mate told you about a declining economy. Thankfully the interview room is close by.

You eventually make it to the interview room and the old crone offers you a coffee. After spending a few minutes wiping yourself down from the coffee you just spilt down your front the old crone asks if you are ready to start the interview proper. She then says something like, “Just as a nice gentle start, talk me through your CV.”

You realise that you can’t remember anything from your CV and you haven’t brought any spare copies. You start to worry about this being a gentle start then what is it going to be like when it gets rough. A few minutes of mumbling about your favourite subjects at school and now she thinks your CV is made up.

Old Prune Face decides to increase the pressure by asking you what you can contribute to the company. Fumbling for an answer you eventually settle on enthusiasm and working to the best of your ability. Irritatingly she mentions that they expect that from everyone in the company and asks if you have anything else to offer.

Like a guppy opening and closing your mouth scrambling for an answer you desperately clutch at straws. Realising that she may be picturing you as naked has not helped and now you have forgotten the original question. You hope to make it out of the interview sometime in this lifetime.

Just as you are losing the will to live the interviewer tells you that she has finished all her questions and asks if you have any questions for her. In an effort to appear keen you ask her how soon will the company make a decision. Hoping you have got the job she leads you out to the street after answering your question.

Whilst many people will have had some experience of this sort of this imagine an interview where you are so confident that you build massive amounts of rapport with the interviewer as well as take control of the interview. You then answer all the interview questions implanting suggestions that you are the best candidate for the role whilst turning any objections in to benefits. How good would this sort of interview feel?

Sound impossible? Perhaps not, many of these skills are naturally occurring and you have certainly seen others do this as part of their daily lives.

Some people just walk through life always getting what they want, including the best jobs. I am sure you have met people like that. These are the people using these skills, sometimes naturally, sometimes they have been trained. In the majority of circumstances these skills are learnt quickly and easily in a matter of hours.

Your CV could be rewritten in less than a couple of hours adding lots of NLP and psychological pull to get more interviews than you could dream of. It may take a couple of hours working through a Hypnotic Interview Answer formula, but once it is done you will be able to answer interview questions powerfully for life.

Banishing interview nerves, building rapport, maintaining composure and taking control of the interview all seem like hard skills but they can be learnt in less than thirty minutes. The only difference between a great job and the job you are doing now is spending a couple of hours mastering job interview techniques.
