Shopping For Hats: Some Personal Thoughts

By: Jen Narron

Everyone loves shopping for hats! Well, not really. Actually, I find that shopping for hats can be a very frustrating experience. It seems that either the sales clerk is not very knowledgeable, or that I don't really know what I want. So I decided to sit down and put together this guide to shopping for hats -- for both you and me.

When you go out hat shopping, what are you after? The latest trendy designs? I think that is the mistake that most of us make. Instead, I think that before we go shopping we should think about this: what do I really need this hat FOR? What is it's function?

Does that seem strange to you? It probably does. Yet, think about how many hats are designed primarily for function -- a particular purpose. If you can get that need, the function, clearly in your mind, then you can ignore all the others. For example, when you walk into your local retail shop, you will have your eyes (and mind) focused on shopping for a new rain hat, rather than all the high-fashion bonnets.

Another type of hat you might go shopping for might be a chauffeur hat -- or perhaps a winter outdoorsman's cap. If you fix your mind firmly on what you need your hat for, then you will be better able to resist the sales pitch for a pricey, trendy, high-fashion bonnet that serves no real purpose.

Why do we do that? Because we have been trained to believe that if a hat is functional it must be cheap-looking -- and this is just not so! For example, if you go shopping for a sun protection hat, you will find many great-looking items for sale, yet these are also very functional.

Perhaps you are not interested in all of this. Perhaps all you are after is something that is plain and fun. Then you can't do better than buy a straw hat. They look particularly good on all the little girls, and they are very hard to damage or destroy.

Another recommendation: Winter will soon be coming (at least in the US). For this reason, you should look into purchasing a good outdoor hat, or cold-weather hat the next time you go clothes shopping. These types of hats are very functional, and can be bought inexpensively. They are made from both animal fur as well as synthetic materials.

Are you a crafter? Well, some of the nicest hats that I have seen lately are crochet hats. These hats used to be made at home using crochet hat patterns, but most women have little time for doing that, so retailers have taken up the slack and are now offering many different styles of crochet hats for you to look at in their store.

Well, there you have it: Some informal (and unscientific) thoughts on hat selection. Writing all of this down has sure helped me -- I hope it helps you as well.
