Setting up a Business in the Home

By: James Walsh

Put aside all your worries and woes. There are wonderful opportunities at your door-step that could allow you to work from your house. It would permit you to work with flexible timings. With the technological revolution and the rat race, the business environment has encountered more changes. Utilising this changing scenario, one can do wonders to elevate their status. There are many precedents that people have started businesses from home and become more successful. Let us see a couple of successful case studies.

Sue Botterill, mother of three children from Solihull, West Midlands, conceived an idea of starting a business at home, which could consume less time and also generate a reasonable income. She wanted to spend more time with her children and, at the same time, she desperately needed money; so she started to work from home. She launched a local monthly magazine to serve the small suburb in her locality. She titled her magazine ‘The Dickens Health Directory’, which featured restaurant reviews, advertising, features on local business, local events and cinema news. Though a few were skeptical about the success of the venture, she firmly wanted to try her hand. The outcome not only surprised others, but even Sue was so astonished to know that her profit for the first month turned out to be £1,800.

There was a positive response and, over the next 18 months, her magazine became so popular and strengthened its base very well. Every month she has been earning more than £2,000. One would be very much surprised to know the time that she has been spending per week, yes, she allocated only 8-10 hours in a week. She is highly contented with her income. Though she does not want to spread its tentacles, she has been receiving many offers from other local places to publish a similar kind of magazine. Sue also helped some of her friends to set up their magazines on the same line. Emulating Sue there are more than 1000 individuals publishing local community magazines every month and most of them are women. They are doing it on part-time basis amidst family commitments.

Another successful story was Karen Skidmore’s from Hindhead, Surrey had spent all her 20’s in the corporate world, but after the birth of her second child, she was reluctant to go back to the same field. She thought of having a change in her career. Rather than jumping from job to job, she wanted to become self-employed without much capital and also with a little cash flow. After searching for her new career paths, she ended up with starting ‘CanDoCanBe’.

It aimed at supporting women who want to start up businesses from home. She has been sharing the lessons that she had learnt and also bringing women together to enjoy the affordable informal business advice. She has been arranging various monthly networking events attracting nearly 45 women every month. She maintains ‘run, sell-out’ business forums, offers downloadable home study business toolkits and trains people through telephone conferencing.

Karen says that the business gives her flexible timing and allows her to stay for a long time at home. She is also getting income on par with the part-time job corporate salary. Operating a home-based business is considered as the best for those who want to spend more time with their family. It will give them the satisfaction of being the boss of a small concern. One can enjoy the flexible working hours by spending more time with their children and also can arrange their work schedule without affecting their family’s requirements.

Before venturing into a business, persons should think of their talents that they possess. With those talents, one has to think what kind of home-based business he or she can start. For instance, if someone is good at accounting and organisational skills, then the suitable home businesses would be tax preparation, book-keeping, business manager and professional organiser. The person’s talents and skills are the base for any successful business venture including home-based business.
