Sacramento: California's intriguing state capital

By: Andrew Regan

Found in the Central Valley region at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers, Sacramento is the State capital of California and is the State’s seventh-most populated city. Enjoying a great year-round climate, Sacramento is renowned throughout the USA as one of the best places in which to live, and is also a great place to visit.

Typical of the Californians’ laid-back approach to life the residents of Sacramento are quite relaxed about applying more than one nickname to their city and current favourites include: Capital City, River City, The Big Tomato, Sacratomato, and the City of Trees. The locals also have several other colloquial names for their city, such as Sacto, the Sac or Sactown.

Founded by Swiss pioneer John Sutter, Sacramento was first established as a westernised colony in 1839, under the protection of Sutter’s Fort. The city shot to prominence following the 1849 gold rush as it rapidly developed as a major distribution point for California, and terminus to the first Transcontinental Railway. Sacramento became California’s State Capital in 1855 - the fifth city to get the honour after Monterey, San Jose, Vallejo and Benicia.

The American and Sacramento Rivers were fundamental in providing access to the growing city of Sacramento in the nineteenth century, and are now used extensively for recreation. Boaters often make the journey from the Bay Area of San Francisco and vice versa during the summer months, and both rivers are used for jet-ski, kayaking and rafting to varying degrees. However, Old Sacramento is what draws most tourists to the city, other than Sutter’s Fort. Along its cobbled streets are many restored and reconstructed buildings, some of which date from the 1860s. Here tourists can ride historic steam-hauled trains of the old State Railroad and paddle steamers from the Old West. Nearby the California State Capitol building bears more than a passing resemblance to the nation’s Capitol Building in Washington DC.

Sacramento is still a major transport hub, with an international airport handling flights from most US cities, Canada and the rest of the World, with trains reaching the city via Amtrak and the Sacramento Valley Rail Station. If you are planning a visit to all these superb attractions it is best to book a hotel in Sacramento in the downtown district of Area One. From there you will be ideally placed to visit all that the capital city of California has to offer.
