Online Marketing; Choosing the Right Affiliate Programs

By: Daniel Marx

You only need to do two things to earn money online; drive traffic to your website and select the right affiliate program(s).

Be sure you know your audience. If they live in condominiums, don't try to sell them lawnmowers. If they are over seventy, they probably won't buy hip hop music. Find out who they are and you find out what they might buy.

These questions, and the answers to them, are critical. Be ready to spend a lot of time thinking about which products and services are most likely to be attractive to your audience. And, be prepared to make changes in what you offer if your first attempts are unsuccessful. Sometimes the trial and error method is the best way to learn.

When considering affiliate programs, you might also want to consider some that pay you for sales leads rather than actual sales. In some instances, programs will pay you up to $50 or more when a visitor to your site requests information about a product or service.

In other words, each time your visitor asks for information on a product or service, you earn a commission. You can even get paid when your visitors sign up for a free coupon or sample.

Of course, you want to choose affiliate programs which pay you good commissions, but you might be better off taking a lower commission from a program which will pay you a percentage of the earnings of any referrals you can generate.

Remember, you should choose programs which:

1. offer you good online tracking so you can see how you're doing.

2. well written advertising copy and well designed, attention getting banners.

3. support you by answering questions quickly, advising you, and paying you on time.

4. offer your visitors a good product or service at a fair price.

Finally, and here's one of the best bits of advice I ever got, track everything that moves to look for trends and areas in which you can improve performance.
