Meaning of Mentoring

The concept of content of mentoring begins with description of the process itself. Therefore, mentoring is a mixture of activities that are carried out by a specific person, who is also called mentor, with the intention of providing support for one more person, the protégé or mentee. Help of mentor is especially important when mentee has not enough practice of the job conducted and mentor offers a valid guidance for this person, in order that the task would be finished productively and it would become an example for mentee to catch on.



There are several creative explanation of this process, they describe it as developmental relationship or interaction between protégé and mentee, including benefits for both parties experience exchange; nevertheless, all of these meanings have one point in common – joint relationships developed between mentee and mentor.



The mentorship’s history goes far in antiquity, as it was introduced by Homer in “Odyssey”, where inexperienced and young Telemachus is guided by the goddess Athena to rise above the difficulties and obstacles that he had faced. Later on, traditions of mentorship were reproduced in religions like Buddhism or Hinduism, and even Christianity, that promoted the concept of mutual help and support.



In contemporary society, the mentorship theory has taken a little different and more complicated forms because of the fact that fresh methods and approaches of mentorship’s custom were produced, making this procedure much more advantageous for both mentor and mentee.



On the way to profound comprehension of mentoring relationships it is significant to differentiate the types of mentorship: formal and informal. The informal type is rooted in the idea that the parties should develop mentorship relationships by themselves without any certain approaches or requirements. Then again formal mentoring has an aim to create assigned relationships intended to enhance profitable development of staff. Formal mentoring includes a huge variety of implements like program aims, exercises provided for both mentors and protégés and lastly evaluation of results of mentorship programs.
