How to Use An Outstanding Cover Letter to Dominate the Job Market

By: Erik J. Michaels..

Having an amazing cover letter can be critical to your success in search for a job. The average American's search for a job can statistically last up to nine months, which makes it now more critical than ever that you shine above all the others and get in the door before that door gets slammed in your face. The perfect cover letter can do wonders towards achieving that goal.

When your potential bosses are sitting in heaps of applications, and all they want is one single person to do the job, the cover letter is usually their first line of inspection. From the cover letter, they derive their first impressions of you, which makes this stand out as your first chance to be the better guy for the job.

Surviving this first test is absolutely essential to getting the job. The "cover letter round" will make or break your entire shot at the job you're wanting, because the resumes with the good cover letters will proceed onward to the next round, while the resumes with poor cover letters (or none at all!) will be dumped into the paper shredder.

Now, I doubt you somehow found the time to attend college to get a four-year degree in Writing Cover Letters, so you may feel a little intimidated in a world where a great cover letter is almost mandatory. Lucky for you, you don't have to be a cover letter prodigy. All you need is to have a good teacher.

One of the best teachers out there is the tried-and-true example. It's always been wise to learn how to do something important by getting in touch with people who have either done it successfully or have risen above to become "masters" of whatever skill you're trying to learn. However, finding these "experts" isn't always easy, which can make the process rather difficult.

You'll be happy to know that it isn't necessary to go hunting for the people who wrote the successful cover letters, just the cover letters themselves! You can learn a lot more from them than you could from the writers, and they're a lot easier to find.

It's an important skill, being able to analyze something and come up with how to best adapt the inherent principles to fit your needs. A lot of people get too lazy and fail at it by simply plagiarizing, which by no means do I suggest or condone...taking the time to really figure out what makes a great cover letter so great will not only allow you to make your own great cover letters, but it'll also build the analysis skill and make you even more valuable to potential employers!

Never forget the real purpose of the cover letter...it needs to do two things above all else: tell why you're qualified, and set up an interview opportunity. While the first point is important, the biggest goal of the cover letter is always to increase your likelihood of getting an interview. If you can get the interview, it's up to you to get the job...but without a strong cover letter, you may not even make it to the interview stage.
