How To Recover Documents, Files and Photos

By: James Walsh

The songs and compositions, which in a way defined the whole era, in which you were brought up. Those e-mails, which comprised a huge chunk of your personal and professional life. Is it simply data? No sir, it is your very life. Now imagine a scenario that one sunny day, your hard drive simply fails. What have you lost? DATA! Certainly not! To what extent would you go, to get back that so called data? What will you pay to get it back? I know you will be willing to trade your very life for that lost stuff. Calm down! You need not have to lose your life. Data recovery software and experts are here to save the day for you. In plain words, data recovery is the process of retrieving the lost or damaged data from a storage media, which owing to some accident or other reasons, has become inaccessible.

Data recovery industry offers a wide array of software and hardware solutions for your data loss problems. The choice of solution depends upon whether your computer has a physical problem or a logical problem. If your hard drive has failed owing to damage to some mechanical or electronic component, then it is called a physical problem. On the contrary, if your hard drive is working fine, but you have deleted some files or have lost data owing to some other reasons, then the problem is logical. In case of a logical problem, it is possible to use the data recovery software to retrieve the lost data. Many data recovery software are available in the market, which are sometimes offered as freeware. While selecting data recovery software for your problem, one should be very careful. Any authentic data recovery software should qualify certain criteria. Though sophisticated in its conception, good data recovery software should be simple and easy to use. It should come accompanied with a detailed manual and customer support. Good quality recovery software should be flexible in its functioning and should be capable of recovering the data deleted from the recycle bin, data lost due to some malicious program, data lost due to power surge or system shutdown. It should offer a wide range of search tools, making it feasible to find data by date created, name or extension. Take care that the data recovery software you choose has undo features. Sometime you may need to undo the changes you have made, so as to use some other software. The software you select should be usable from some other media than the one from which you are trying to retrieve data. Installing the data recovery software on the same media may cause overwriting, thus making it quite impossible to recover the lost data. Realistically speaking, there exists no comprehensive recovery software as such, which can retrieve data under any situation. So try to look for software which is specific to your problem. It is not necessary that recovery software has to be expensive or bulky to be successful. Sometimes even free and compact software may also give the desired results.

Basically data recovery software retrieves data in two ways. All the files on a computer, even those which have been deleted, have a record in the Master File Table (MFT). MFT informs the computer regarding the name and geographic location of any file on the hard disk. Data recovery software surveys the Master File Table to search for and retrieve the lost files. In case the file system gets damaged or destroyed, the data recovery software tries to retrieve all the files it can, so as to save them on a new disk. Data recovery software can only retrieve those files which you have saved on your computer. It can not recover the data which has not been saved.

In case, you fail to recover the lost data using software or the drive has a physical problem, then try to avail the services of some data recovery specialist or concern, which has the requisite experience and expertise in this field.
