Poker history is rather obscure. No one can truly be certain what the real origin of poker is, but it is generally believed that the game is quite ancient. The name of the game- 'poker'- likely came from the 17th century's French game 'Poque', which descended from the German game 'Pochen' (meaning 'to knock'). Both Poque and Pochen could have developed from the 16th century Spanish game called "Primero", in which three cards were dealt to each participant. Nevertheless, despite all the assumptions, it is not clear whether or not poker as we know it today has anything to do with those games.

Poker also boasts features similar to the Persian game called 'As Nas,' and may have been introduced to French settlers in New Orleans by Persian sailors who came to North America for business purposes. This game was played with five different suits and in a mode similar to the modern 5-card stud game. In addition, it featured similar poker hand rankings, like three-of-a-kind. Bluffing while holding a poor hand in order to deceive other players, was apparently an important ingredient in the game.

Jonathan H. Green, "the reformed gambler," made one of the earliest written references to poker in 1834 in his narrative -"Gambling Unmasked, all Autobiography." Green referred to poker as "the cheating game" being practiced on Mississippi's riverboats. "The cheating Game" quickly replaced the then popular game of 3-card monte. Gamblers preferred the new game because they believed it was more challenging.

Newer Poker

During the American Civil War, the game of poker saw many innovations the list of which included new features, such as draw poker, stud poker and the straight. American gamblers made further developments to the game, such as the wild card (somewhere in the late 1870's), lowball and split-pot-poker (somewhere in the 1900's) and community card poker games (around 1925). The U.S. military is usually credited for spreading the game to other countries, mostly on the Asian continent.

The legality of poker

The game of poker had been perceived as an inoffensive pastime until the beginning of the 18th century when the government of Nevada made it illegal, claiming that the activity was immoral. Nevertheless, California's legislators stepped in and argued that not all types of poker were based solely on luck. Californians maintained that poker was mostly based on skill and experience. Following this statement, Nevada legalized gambling activities back in 1931.

Nowadays poke

Poker history changed its nature completely in less than two hundred years. Today, poker is no longer a game dominated by cheats and criminals. As opposed to the past, modern traditional and online poker events are considered prestigious and highly popular. The criminal environment that surrounded poker for centuries faded away. The outlaws have been replaced by professional poker pros, who are often regarded as celebrities, just like Hollywood movie stars.
