Helpful Hints For Moving

By: Lou Rossen

Getting a new place to live is exciting. Moving to it is not. Frankly, it can really make you wonder if you should have got a new place. The following advice will make it worthwhile.

1. The First Step in Packing – The first packing step you should take is to get a large garbage bag or can. It is time for some discipline. As you are packing, toss your junk. Hey, you won’t have to carry it?

2. Packing Books – Books are wonderful reading, but a nightmare to move. Instead of filling boxes with them, put a couple in the bottom of all your boxes. Then create a base for the other stuff and you avoid incredibly heavy boxes.

3. Moving Electric Cords – Electric cords are simple to move, but problems arise at your new home. What cord goes with what thing? Label them to avoid confusion.

4. Dealing with Email – We have all come to rely on the Internet, which can be a problem when we move. You may be unconnected for some time, so you need to consider your email. The best solution is to open a free Yahoo email account.

5. Dealing with lots of Books – Unless you have a prized collection, moving books is a pain in the butt. One option is to sell them. You can go on Amazon and sell them online with little or no problem. Find the book, click the “sell yours’ button.

6. Banging Doors – If you have large stuff in a room, take off the door before trying to move it. You will avoid damaging the door, crushing your fingers and creating new cusswords!

7. Budgeting for Your Move – If you are moving yourself, you should be budgeting for it. As a general rule, you want to set aside one month of rent as your figure. If you don’t spend it all, you can go out and celebrate your new location!

8. Biting Drawers – If you are moving something with drawers, take them out to save your shins. If you can’t, tie a string around the piece to hold them in place.

9. Big Furniture Planning – Before you pack up and move something big and heavy, give some thought to your new house. Specifically, where are you going to put it and how are you going to get it in there?

10. Moving Hanging Clothes – We all have clothes hanging in our closets. When it comes time to move them, don’t take them off the hangers. Just bunch them up and put a big trash bag over them to protect them for the move.

All and all, the goal with moving should be to make the minimum number of trips possible. This means being efficient. Follow these tips and you should be.
