Explore the beautiful Bulgarian Riviera

By: Elisha Burberry

Bulgaria is fast becoming a popular holiday destination for UK travellers now that the East European country has become a full member of the EC. This beautiful country benefits from warm summers and snow-filled winters, making it ideal for holidays all year round. With great natural features such as the Rhodope Mountains, beautiful sandy beaches on the Black Sea and lush plains in between, there is much to see in Bulgaria.

But when it comes to summer the Bulgarian Riviera is the place to visit. During July and August the sun shines on average for 10 -11 hours per day, and the beautiful beaches of the Black Sea provide the perfect venues for a fantastic summer holiday. The 60 mile area between Bourgas in the south and Varna to the north, boasts a heady mix of beautiful beaches, cosmopolitan towns and a unique slice of ancient history. Varna, the third largest city in Bulgaria, is known as the country’s summer capital. Found on the Black Sea coast some 300 miles north of Sofia, it is undeniably the country’s biggest draw when it comes to summer holidays, due to its perfect positioning on the Bulgarian Riviera.

The best way to see this fabulous area of Eastern Europe is by car. But even though Bulgaria is a new entrant to the European tourist industry, it is fast establishing itself and arranging car hire in Bulgaria is just as easy as it would be here in the UK.

Lying just outside Varna, the much-celebrated Seaside Park was built in 1878 and still continues to be the big draw. Within the Park are the Museum of Natural History, Aquarium, Observatory and Planetarium - all great tourist attractions that draw many visitors each year. Another major draw in Varna is Golden Sands, a lively resort that features a two mile beach, chic bars, restaurants and a great selection of exciting water sports.

Get in the car and drive 40 miles down the coast to stunning Nessebar, situated on a rocky peninsula jutting into the Black Sea. Here you will find Sunny Beach, the largest resort on the Bulgarian Riviera, and just off the beach you will find shady groves, hundreds of restaurants, lively bars and a friendly welcome. Nessebar has been settled for the past 3,000 years and there is plenty of evidence of its ancient beginnings, featuring Thracian, Greek and Macedonian ruins.

There is so much more to see on the Bulgarian Riviera that hiring a car would be a sensible option for holidaymakers looking to explore further afield than their base resort. Cheap car hire in Bulgaria is available from a number of internationally known companies, so it is possible to book your car online before travelling. If you are considering flying to this beautiful part of the world, consider car rental in Bulgaria as essential to see the best the Black Sea coast has to offer.
