Downsides of Breast Augmentation

By: Sandra Wilkins

Although breast augmentation has proved to be a miracle procedure for some, it does indeed have a significant number of downsides. While not meant to discourage you from pursuing your goal, this article is designed to inform you of the drawbacks of the breast augmentation procedure. As with anything else, whether it be a surgical procedure or particular service, it is important that you know both the benefits and downsides so you can make an informed decision.

Unlike most decisions you will make in your life, choosing whether or not to undergo breast augmentation can be a costly one. When it comes down to adding up all the costs of this procedure, you can expect to pay $5,000+. This can be scary considering that the figure is only a modest estimate. Although you can expect a significant change in the appearance of your chest area, you really have to ask yourself whether the procedure is a necessity. This is not something you can buy and return later because you’re not happy with it or find yourself strapped for cash. Thus, you need to consider you options extremely carefully before making a final decision.

Surgical procedures all carry some degree of risk. This risk fluctuates depending on the skill of a particular surgeon and the health of the prospective patient. Breast augmentation procedures can be risky given the right combination of circumstances. A poorly qualified surgeon, for one, can place a patient in a good amount of risk. A lackluster surgeon can be avoided with the proper amount of research. A patient who has a history of poor health can also be placed in harms way be choosing to undergo breast augmentation. Thus, be sure to carefully disclose your medical history to your plastic surgeon during your consultation.

Finally, an augmentation procedure could require a substantial amount of downtime. While the specific amount of downtime will vary from patient to patient and from profession to profession, you should prepare for the worst. This could mean two or more weeks away from work. Before making a decision to proceed with breast augmentation, make sure you can afford to take this amount of time off from work. You don’t want to take time off work spur of the moment so when you return you find that you no longer have a job.

Hopefully, you’ve come to the realization that breast augmentation can have both its benefits and downfalls. You need to evaluate your circumstances to see how these benefits and downfalls could affect you. After weighing both the perks and cons, you should be able to make a final determination as to whether or not this procedure is for you.
