ADD/ADHD Diagnosis Predicament

By: Jimmy Brownen

The prevalence of the ADD/ADHD diagnosis does not definitely indicate that something is dreadfully wrong with the nation’s children, but rather that something has definitely changed. Although some cases of out-of-control children being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD are most likely due to nutritional imbalances and deficiencies as well as allergies and sensitivities, a good number of cases are likely due to the fact that child rearing has changed.
The are factors attributing to disorders such as a child’s social, emotional and environmental development and it is because of this that ADD/ADHD has attained the psychiatric disorder from American Psychological Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). It is argued that ADD/ADHD should be seen as a personality type rather than a psychiatric disorder.
Not only have some experts argue that ADD/ADHD should not be in DSM but many other conditions too that have been classified in DSM as psychiatric disorders. Individuals diagnosed with these conditions as well as ADD/ADHD does not feel as though they suffer from a psychiatric condition and there have been no evidence to support that they fall under psychiatric disorder.
ADD/ADHD sufferer might not be suffering from anything, they might just be special.
It is obvious that an individual suffering from asthma would not be classified as having a psychiatric condition. It’s also obvious that someone with diabetes would not be classified according to DSM criteria. In the same manner, individuals diagnosed as having ADD/ADHD should avoid a psychiatric diagnosis.
Diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is not backed with concrete evidence.
Millions of children have been treated with medication every day as the medical community insist that these children are sick and treating them would be the only way that they will fit in and adhere to mold that have been created by the society. It is then not the problem of ADD/ADHD but a case of these children being forced to fit in.
The rise in diagnosis of children with ADD/ADHD can be linked to the changes made in parenting, education and rules invented by society. Furthermore, these individuals do not feel as is there is anything mentally wrong with them. These individual are distinct because they process, perceive and react more to internal and external stimuli than others.
Once upon a time, children were allowed to interact with their environment. Children were encouraged to run and jump and play at will. But, increasingly, children are not responding to such restrictions. The demands of conformity along with the stresses of modern life may have a significant effect on people who cannot manage to fit into the mold.
These individuals are different from others and the problem may not be due to the fact that they are uncontrollable. Compromising is a better way to handle these individuals than presuming that they need medical treatment.
Is ADD/ADHD a warning that something is wrong with parenting, society, and the environment?
The fast paced life our children are living in may just as well be the caused of them unable to slow down. If parents took the time to provide these children with the relaxing speed they need to enjoy their life as children then this problem may be avoidable. Children are rushed off to wherever they need to be such as school, preschool or even day-care. The sorts of food fed on them are prepackaged for almost all their meals and entertainments are only available from the fast-paced television and computers.
But, before the blame for ADD/ADHD, Autism, Tourette’s, and a host of other psychiatric disorders is placed squarely on the shoulders of mom and dad, it’s important to realize that the problem is with a society that forces people into a position where childcare and education is so expensive that warehousing children is the only affordable option, where a two-income family is no longer a choice but a necessity, and where children are forced into regulated, narrowly focused, and task-oriented behavior far earlier than they once were. Just like the child with asthma is not well-suited for outside play, and the child with diabetes is not well-suited for a “regular” diet, the ADD/ADHD child is just not well-suited to this type of lifestyle.
There is of course no need for parents to feel guilty in creating this situation for their children because most parents do what they do because they think it is the best for their children. Therefore, parents are now encouraged to think of the best option for their children. Even the FDA has labeled additives safe and the failure of the medical community to keep people informed on alternative methods of treating ADD/ADHD may have led to the current predicament.
The trend toward natural, non-medicinal, alternatives for treating such health conditions as Type II diabetes, high cholesterol, and even ADD/ADHD indicates that people are beginning to realize that the medical community and the health industry took the wrong path in opting for the quick, pharmaceutical, cure, and that other options are not only available, but preferred.
