A Kiddie Solution To Lowering Your Utility Bills

By: Graham Tasker

One of your most challenging tasks in running a household is keeping your basic utility costs within reasonable bounds. The major utilities such as gas, electricity and water can sure eat up a huge chunk of the average household income. So it has to make sense to try to reduce these costs to a minimum - and you'll be helping the planet too.

Now, if your household is not a million miles away from the norm, your kids are no doubt contributing in a pretty major way to your utility bills. Most of their toys and other means of entertainment seem to involve the use of electricity in order for them to function. Given these facts, it makes sense, if you seriously want to reduce your household energy consumption, to get the kids onside to help you do it.

It is no secret that kids love electronic games, as this is a great way to pass the time and is surely fun. If your house has a video game console or computer that you allow your kids to play games on, try to assign a time when the kids can play with it. You shouldn't let your kids play with their video games around the clock, as this will result in soaring electricity bills. Remember that when playing on video game consoles the kids will also use the television. This means a double helping of electricity will be consumed.

A suggested computer game-playing timetable is to impose a limit of a couple hours on weekdays and, say, four hours at weekends. To help with this imposition it's a good idea to stipulate that no playing of computer games will be allowed until homework and chores have been completed.

Something a lot of people forget when it comes to conserving energy is that gadgets on standby still use significant amounts of electricity. With this in mind, encourage your children to completely unplug and pack away their electronic gadgets after use. This also has the beneficial side effect of teaching them to be neat and tidy with their belongings.

Another of the Earth's most precious resources that you should encourage your childen to take care of is water. Although bath time can be synonymous with play time for children you should limit use of the bath and the shower. Try to use a child-size bath for younger children rather than the full-size one in your bath room.

A surprising amount of water can be wasted during the simple act of brushing the teeth. You should teach your children to turn off the tap during brushing of the teeth and only use a small cup of water for gargling.

Individually, all of the above might be thought to have a small impact on minimizing your utility bills and helping to conserve energy, but collectively, over time, they can have a significant effect. They will also instill discipline and proper stewardship qualities in your children and that can only be good for the future of our beautiful planet.
