A Famous Divorce

By: James Walsh

Perhaps, the first ‘famous divorce’ could be regarded as that of King Henry VIII, who in 1553 wished to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne Boleyn, a commoner while the former was still alive. The Roman Church refused to be a party to his request, and so Henry VIII separated English Catholicism from Roman control by creating the Church of England. Even though he subsequently married Anne Boleyn by obtaining an annulment of his marriage with Catherine, declaring it as incestuous under Levictal law, his betrothal of Anne Boleyn was by no means final. He later had her convicted of treason, summarily executed and went on to marry four more wives.

However, this piece shall focus on a more recent, contemporary ‘famous divorce’; in fact, one that involves two individuals who can be referred to as ‘serial divorcers’ for their involvement in a total of seven marriages and six divorces: Donald and Ivana Trump.

Donald John Trump, who was born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, New York, is a two-time Emmy Award-nominated American business executive, entrepreneur, television personality and author. He is the CEO of the Trump Organization, an American-based real estate developer in the real estate market and the founder of Trump Entertainment, which operates gambling casinos. He is, perhaps, the most prominent real estate developer in the United States, known primarily for his flamboyant attitude, gutsy business acumen, hit Apprentice reality TV show, and his bestselling books, such as Trump: The Art of the Deal. Donald Trump has had a rather mercurial business career, declaring bankruptcy several times before arising like a phoenix from the ashes to become a millionaire once over. He reportedly met Ivana, born Ivana Marie Zelnícková in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia in 1976 and they were married the next year. Ivana’s early life is the stuff of romance novels; she was selected as an alternate on the 1968 Czechoslovakian Olympic Ski Team, which allowed her several opportunities to travel outside the Communist Bloc. Soon after, she married childhood friend George Syrovatka in order to attain a foreign passport so that Communist leaders would not deem her a defector. In the early 1970s, she earned a master’s degree in physical education from the Charles University of Prague. In 1975 she left Czechoslovakia for Canada. For the following two years she lived in Montreal, working as a model for some of Canada's top fur companies. In 1976 she moved to New York to promote the Montreal Olympics. That same year she also divorced Syrovatka.

She and Trump married on April 7, 1977 in a grand, high society wedding. Trump’s career embarked on a heroic rise soon after, with projects commissioned in New York, New Jersey, and several locations on the Eastern seaboard. Ivana become closely involved with the Trump organisation, and headed the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Toward the late 1980s, Ivana began to disengage herself from Trump businesses, citing the need to devote more time to her family, Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka, and Eric. Her husband then placed her in charge of the renovation of the Plaza Hotel, citing her experience in interior design.

The marriage first began to show signs of strain when rumours began to emerge that Trump was having a thinly-disguised affair with a former beauty queen from Georgia, Marla Maples. Ivana retained a high-profile entertainment lawyer and filed for divorce in 1991. The divorce made the headlines because Ivana demanded a substantially larger portion of Trump’s business that was stated in the prenuptial agreement; she argued that she had added substantial value to Trump’s empire during their marriage. The divorce became acrimonious, but a tragic turn of events ended the conflict when Ivana’s father passed away and Trump was at her side to console her at the funeral. The divorce was finalized the next year, with Ivana receiving a reported $50 million in cash, assets, jewellery, and other forms of wealth. She has since embarked on solo business ventures and has reportedly doubled her fortune in the years since.

The Trump divorce is a classic example of a marriage heralded in the media almost as much as the subsequent separation; it seems that the media of today likes to destroy what it creates with as much, if not more, zeal.
